Centralised Recruitment Hub

In 2005 Bombardier awarded us a Master Vendor contract. We now take care of the recruitment of all contract workers across Bombardier’s UK operation, from the initial resourcing to the ongoing service and support, from a centralised recruitment hub.

Our 13 Specialist Consultants, finance officers and account managers are based in a dedicated office conveniently located just 300 metres from the Derby plant front door, and manage around 1,500 contractors working at Bombardier sites across the UK every week. Using our own extensive internal resources and our rock solid Tier 1 and Tier 2 support system we are able to supply Bombardier with suitable candidates for any role, in any area of the company and at any level – from senior engineers to junior administrative assistants.

Once candidates have been accepted by Bombardier we organise and administer the medical and health & safety checks and take care of any employment related paperwork. We also deliver the formal induction courses new starters are required to attend at each of the Bombardier sites.

Flexible and Scalable

All of our Consultants have instant access to our vast company database of registered candidates located around the country. This database is added to on a daily basis by Shorterm Group staff recruiting for rail industry clients across the UK. We also advertise on and search through specialist rail industry job boards and, thanks to our reputation for placing people on rail projects around the country, we receive a high volume of in-bound enquiries from skilled and experienced people wishing to line up their next job.

Our unrivalled resources coupled with the team’s 45+ years of combined rail recruitment experience enable us to provide Bombardier with a fully flexible and scalable service to meet the fluctuating demands of their business, finding the right people for every role at very short notice.

Instant Access To Recruitment Activity

Everything we do is reported to Bombardier through an online Master Vendor ordering system. This provides the management team with up-to-date information on the current and historic head count; the number of hires on a particular day, week or month; how much each department has spent and more. So anyone who needs it has full and instant access to all recruitment activity relating to their vast and varied contract workforce, 24 hours a day.

Efficient New Processes

We are always introducing efficient new processes and service innovations to deliver cost savings and other benefits to our client. Our recent innovations include implementing an electronic time and attendance system, so contract workers now use ‘swipe cards’ to record their comings and goings – and managers don’t need to waste their own time signing off time sheets.

We have also set up a work-based training programme to enable all of the contract workers at Bombardier to achieve the industry recognised NVQ Performing Manufacturing Operations Level 2 qualification – at no cost to Bombardier or the workers themselves.

1,500 Contractors A Week

The Master Vendor model works at every level for Bombardier, delivering time and efficiency savings across the business. And we have the figures to prove it:

  • Between 2005 and 2010 we had an average of 1,500 contractors a week on our payroll
  • Our Average Fill Rate was 98%
  • And we reduced Bombardier’s total recruitment costs by £4.48 million compared to the previous five year period.
